THE BOTTLE TREE

In 1878, Memphis, Tennessee was devastated by a Yellow Fever Epidemic...affected families hung blue medicine bottles on tree limbs near their homes...they were of the mindset that this practice would ward off the evil spirits associated with the plague...

Some hung then...and still hang bottles from family fruit trees...believing, should anyone eat from the tree without the owner's permission, that the protective spirits residing within the bottles would cause the perpetrator's bowels to literally explode!

This practice has it's roots in belief systems yet alive, brought over with captive Africans and perpetuated by many centuries of Amer*Afrikan offspring...generational victims of the horrific Trans Atlantic Slave Trade (beginning in 1502)...

Some thought then and many still say now...the hung bottles recieve voice from the wind...and when water is poured into the bottles, "jes' so" the ancestor's voices are given to speak within the rythm of the wind...seemingly, guiding and protecting all of heART and mind who would but listen and hear...enabling many to remember and too, recall...

Cross cultural interminglings have made the preservation & perpetuation of the spiritual and asthetic appeal of bottle trees so significant that latter day versions of them are recognized as cultural purveyors and visual symbols of ECO*ENVIRO*ARTS
movements...
